New England is a region of the country that shares many common attitudes and beliefs, yet consists
of six relatively small, but distinct states. In the early formation of the state societies of hospital
pharmacists, the societies felt that continuing education would best be conducted on a regional basis
which would allow the sharing of professional ideas among hospital pharmacists from each of the
different state societies. In 1953, the NECHP was formed by the 6 state societies of hospital
pharmacists to meet this need. Delegates from each of the state societies served on the Board of
the NECHP and its membership consisted of all the members of the individual societies. The goals
and purpose of the Council remain much the same today, serving a unique need for a unique region
on the country.

No Membership Dues
Membership is open to any individual interested in the goals and purpose of the NECHP who works
or resides in the New England region. There are no membership dues. Anyone who is a member of
any of the state societies of hospital pharmacy (ASHP affiliates) is automatically a member. Each
year NECHP membership lists are updated by the state societies.

Easy Involvement
Organizational involvement in the NECHP is easy. Monthly business meetings are open to any
interested individual. These meetings generally center around planning for continuing education
activities, and are held around the Marlborough, MA area which is close to I-495, Route 290, and
Route 90 (Mass turnpike) on weekday evenings. People who actively participate at business
meetings can be reimbursed for travel expenses to the meeting and receive complimentary
registration at NECHP seminars. Active participation is not only welcomed, but encouraged. Contact
a NECHP officer for more details.

A Regional Society of Hospital Pharmacists
The New England area, because of its size, uniquely lends itself to the provision of continuing
education on a regional basis. The NECHP was the first regional society of hospital pharmacy in the
United States. The NECHP consists of members from each of the six New England societies of
hospital pharmacists. Participants in NECHP educational and planning meetings are given the
opportunity to share their professional experiences with others from the entire New England region.

Emphasis on Continuing Education Activities
Unlike other state organizations, which are involved in extensive lobbying and legislative activities as
well as organizational representation on the ASHP, the NECHP is not directly involved in such
activities. Since 1953, the major goal of the NECHP has remained the provision of high quality
continuing education related to hospital pharmacy. The NECHP is approved as a provider of
continuing pharmaceutical education by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education
(ACPE).
